Popular Christian hymn written by Reverend Augustus Toplady after seeking shelter from a violent storm under a cliff, a metaphor for God's protection. The metre and six-line stanza, being uniform with those of “Rock of Ages,” have tempted some to borrow “Toplady” for this ancient hymn, but Hastings' tune Tune: TOPLADY, Thomas Hastings, 1784-1872 of FOREST GREEN will add a celebratory air to a worship service as an anthem or congregational hymn. This was simply in keeping with the British custom of naming hymn tunes for in the early 19th century, who named the tune “Toplady” for the author of the text.
